Alginates
Raw materials
Alginates are produced from various types of brown seaweeds (Phaeophyceae), all of which are found along rocky coasts. In the North Atlantic, they are harvested mainly in the U.S.A., Great Britain, France (Brittany), Norway and South America (Peru, Chile).
There are two main types:
- Laminariaceae: Laminaria Hyperborea and Laminaria digitata
- Fucales: Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus serratus
